Seattle Pinball League

March 13 2010 Tournament Results

Our fifth Seattle Pinball event featured a new round robin tournament format and for a fifth time a new champion. March brought us to Milton and the home of James and Janice Edes. James' legendary collection did not disappoint with tournament games ranging from Bumper (1936) to Medieval Madness (1997) with many early Stern games in between. The usual suspects helped with the set up and preparation beforehand. I can't emphasis enough the collaborative effort in making the league happen thank you everyone involved. A special thanks to Greg Ong, visiting from California, who fixed and set up a numerous games on his own the morning of the tournament.

The new format divided our 38 participants into 4 equally ranked groups. Each group member played one another in a head to head match up. A coin flip would determine game or player position. With the varied games to choose from, the coin flip became a critical factor in who would advance. A five way tie-breaker between, Bobby, Bobbe, Grant, Brian and Dave would determine the last 2 positions to make the top 8. First time SPL participants Bobbe and Grant came away with the top scores on Sky Jump (Gottlieb 74). Grant didn't factor in his beginner's luck and had to be at another appointment. So next in line Bobby Connover makes the semis. Top 8: Andrew, Robert G, Robert K, Maka, Brad, Rod, Bobbe, Bobby.

Another round of robin with everyone playing head to head made a final 4 of Rod, Andrew, Robert, and Robert. So here's how my final games came down. I beat Rod on Spot-a-card (a 1960 Gottlieb woodrail). I lost to Robert K on Lightning (Stern 1981) and I beat Robert G on Spectrum (Bally 1981). Rod beat Robert and Robert. So we have with Rod and Andrew at 2-1, and Robert and Robert at 1-2. Rod chose Miss O (Williams 1969) for the final tie-breaker. The ball rolled around and chimes sounded. Somehow Rod scored more points. So another first time champion Rod Olsen. This also marks a remarkable comeback from Rod's showing at the Davidson's in February which makes this tournament a worst to first victory. Robert K beat Robert G so we have our top 4 of Rod, Andrew, Robert K and Robert G just off the podium for a second straight tournament.

I enjoyed the new round robin format. The event host can determine the type of tournament so I'm sure there will be new and different things to come.

Up next in a quick 3 weeks is Randy's.
